Kenyan "Villagers" > Sophia Wabuko
Sophia Wabuko, 60, joined KCU in 2012. Sophia used to travel by train from the western part of Kenya to sell indigenous vegetables to the people who live in the City. Then the train stopped ferrying people and Sophia decided to settle in Nairobi, Kibera. She cares for two orphaned children, Oscar (17) and Hezron (7). She took them in because her biological children are now grown up and married. She graduated from selling vegetables to running a food kiosk, but went back to selling vegetable due to ill health. She almost gave up, it was so hard to make any money, but the she received a loan and business training. she is able now to make enough to feed her children and to expand her business. she especially appreciates the encouragement and advice shared at the bi-monthly meetings of KCU.
Her biggest challenge is school fees. She would like to receive bigger loans for her business. Her hope is that the children will go to school, excel and get good jobs. (Information recorded January, 2014).
