Willimina Nangira, 52, has lived in Kibera for 25 years. She sells vegetables to support 2 orphaned children and 8 birth children. Levenda (12) and Kate (10) were brought to Kibera and stayed with her in 2005. Their parents died in a boating accident. They are just like her own children now, she says, but it can be a load!
When she joined KCU, she received basic training in sales skills, and she is faithfully repaying a $60 loan that has enabled her to increase the variety of her stock. Soon she will qualify for another one. The children’s school fees were also paid. She appreciates the counselling she has received and the support from bi-monthly meetings with other KCU members. She has participated in a basket and soap making workshop. Despite her dire situation, she is jovial and kind.
If she can borrow larger micro-loans, she would like to trade weaved craft and mats, which can be accessed cheaply in her home region. (Information recorded in 2013)
