Kenyan "Villagers" > josephine Janini
Josephine Kanini, (38) has lived in Kibera for the last 25 years. She cares for nine children three of whom are orphans. She joined Village of Love in 2011. She used to survive by selling firewood from the nearby forest under very harsh conditions. She would at times loose all her firewood collection on her way back from the forest, snatched by thugs. She has taken two loans and initially struggled to pay. The volunteers visited her often and helped her overcome her social problems that hindered her from making profits. She cleared her first loan and went for the second one; total amount borrowed is $180. She now lives by selling small quanitities of soap, sugar, mendazi and cabbage, and baskets that she learned to make at a livelihoods workshop. She has appreciated the psychological support and sharing with other parents caring for orphaned children, learning from one another how to deal with the challenges. Her greatest challenge is to provide food for all the children, and to have school uniforms. She would now like a larger loan to expand her small business.(Information recorded in 2014)
