Janet Otieno, 40, has lived in Kibera for the last 20 years. She makes African dresses and baskets from waste paper. More recently she has sold second hand shoes. Before joining KCU in 2012, she could hardly make ends meet, as her husband has no steady job. Her family comprising 4 birth children and 3 orphaned children take a big toll on their meager resources. Now, however, she is able to provide what she feels to be a proper meal at least once a day. She took a loan of $60 and repaid with the required time. Now she is struggling to pay back a $120 loan. She put the money into second hand shoe business, but the returns were not good, especially just after the country’s general elections, March 4th 2013. The Village of Love volunteers with the help of the Programme Administrator, Leonora Obara, are helping her to recover. (Information recorded in 2013)
