Kenyan "Villagers" > Eunice Nambusi Ogutu
Eunice is a skilled tailor. She makes upholstery, curtains, pillow cases and mosquito nets. Trained in a village polytechnic, she was employed for long time until the company she worked for closed down. Eunice decided to set up her own business. She encountered many problems but she persevered.
Eunice supports one orphan, the only child of a friend of hers, and four biological children as well as contributing to the support of six nephews and nieces, also orphaned, who live upcountry. All her children are in school, except for the eldest who now weaves mats for a living and helps to support the other children
Given the burden of school fees for her children and her lack of capital, she was very happy when she joined Kijiji Cha Upendo. The fortnightly sessions have helped her learn how to communicate with her teenage children. Two loans amounting to $180 have helped her buy items in bulk. Other beneficiaries have given her tips as to where to sell her products. Eunice is willing to train youngsters at her shop. She aspires to open a big shop and then a factory. (Information recorded in 2013)
Eunice has become so skilled as a businesswoman that she has now been moved to the new cluster of women (Cluster 3), formed in 2015, in order to mentor those women in business skills. This year her daughter, Josephine Namayi Auma, achieved the highest marks in the High School entrance exams, and has been admitted to a prestigious Girls High School through a SHOFCO scholarship. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for a child whose mother, just a few years ago, was struggling to keep her children in school.(recorded 2016)
