Christine Musyoki, 62, sells second hand clothes to support 3 birth children and 3 orphaned children. She joined Village of Love in 2012. Having paid back her first loan of $60, she is about to receive her second one. Over 40 years of living in Kibera, she has witnessed it grow from a wellgroomed settlement for the Nubian soldiers, who fought on the side of The King’s African Rifles during World War II, to a slum inhabited by all types of people. At the fortnightly Village of Love community meetings, Christine is always advising young mothers on how best to deal with children, especially the vulnerable ones. She tells them that in African culture, if one happened to find an abandoned or lost child, the onus was on that person to care for them till they were found by their kin. They would belong to the person who found them and would have equal rights with other children in the home. If kin demanded the return of the child, animals would be given in compensation.
