Standing Ovation for Francis Wong
“A class act.” “Wonderful evening.” “He’s very talented.”
These were just a few of the positive comments from guests after the All for Love concert at College St. United Church on September 26.
Francis’ personality and humour charmed the audience. Singing in five different languages a range of songs from opera and the classics to film and Broadway, his fresh and authentic interpretations held us spellbound, whether he was pouring out passionate love for an absent love or tenderly seeking God in urgent prayer. He received a well deserved standing ovation.
“How did you find him?” people asked. Don St. Jean, a member of College St. United Church, takes all the credit. A retired maths teacher and world traveller, Don met Francis abroad and invited him to visit Canada.
“You play the piano, I sing,” said Francis. “We should do a musical soiree.”
“Make it a concert, “ said Don.
“Do you know a charity?”asked Francis. Don, who called our square dance fundraiser in the spring, most certainly did!
For 8 months prior to the concert, Francis prepared, working diligently with his former voice coach in Hong Kong. You see, for the last ten years, Francis has not been performing, but coaching others to do so. “It’s very good for me to do this,” he explained. “When I work on myself in performing, I’m better able to help others.” This is typical of Francis, who does not do anything by halves. He sang out his heart for us on Friday night, his only reward being the joy of giving himself in this way.
When friends at home asked him why he was working so hard for no money, his reply was simple, “If you can give, you must give.”
Francis, we are filled with gratitude: for your demonstration of love, love of music, and love for children who have been orphaned; and for the example of generosity that you have set for us in giving yourself and what you have so that others can be lifted up!
