They visioned!  They planned!  They acted!

Orphan caregiver participating in the Kijiji Cha Upendo 2012 strategic planning sessionFrom the very beginning, the founders of Kijiji Cha Upendo (Village of Love ) aimed at embracing EVERY family in Kibera that cares for children, orphaned and vulnerable through the HIV&AIDS pandemic that has swept sub- Saharan Africa. They re-affirmed this vision in their Strategic Planning Session held early in 2012, setting a goal of adding a new cooperative every year. Now they have begun this expansion.

Wisely, in 2010, they started small, with just one cooperative of 15 families, carefully selected through consultation with government agencies and NGO’s working with impoverished families in Kibera. The families selected have applied small business micro-loans with exciting results. Many say that their children no longer go to bed hungry and they can pay the school fees to keep their children in school. Read more: BENEFICIARIES SPEAK.

Over the last year, the organizers of the project have widened their networks. This has proven very useful in shortening the time and effort involved in selecting the second cooperative of families. As soon as they learned of the successful fundraising efforts here in Canada, they wasted no time. They were able to select another 15 beneficiary families immediately and introduce them to how the Village of Love  operates.

Meet the New Beneficiaries!

Beneficiaries in the newly formed second cooperative of families are singing their appreciation for the opportunity they are being given. They have just completed their introductory workshop where they have been learning how the Village of Love small business micro-loan system operates.

After just two years in existence, Kijiji Cha Upendo (Village of Love ), greatly encouraged by the funds raised here in Canada, has expanded from 15 families with 75 children to now include a second cooperative of 15 families with another 66 children! We are grateful for the resources provided by our partner CAP/AIDS to enable a smooth transition to a larger project. See CAP/AIDS REP VISITS VILLAGE
