Kenyan "Villagers" > Shiliye Abdi
Shiliye Abdi, 57, a widow, has lived in Kibera for as long as she can remember. She married a Nubian and had several children with him. Shiliye supports 4 orphaned children and some of her own grown up children. At times, as many as twelve people depend on her business efforts! She has taken loans amounting to $480, all of which has been repaid. Before she joined Village of Love in 2011, she had to go to the mosque to beg in order to support her large family. Not any more, however! Shiliye is very enterprising, selling different commodities at different times of the year. She sells Hijabs and perfumes close to the Idd ul fitr celebrations and children’s clothing just towards Christmas. At other times she sells shoes, ginger and bed sheets. Larger micro-loans will help her to better provide for all the people depending on her! Shiliye prays that the orphans she is bringing up will grow to become responsible citizens. Shiliye has much wisdom. She advises women to respect their husbands, as this will lead to the children respecting authority. Her advice for the men, including the volunteers, is to empower women, for women, she says, are born with selling skills. She admonishes the men to pay back the money that they borrow from their wives, which is not the norm in Kibera. (Information recorded in 2013)
